What is Lead Crystal?

Answer:
Lead crystal is, like all types of crystal, a kind of glass.
The characteristic that sets lead crystal apart is the lead oxide it is treated with, which adds sparkle by giving it a high index of refraction.  Facets are usually cut into the crystal, to make it even more sparkly.

Crystal can be composed of up to 35% lead, at which point it reaches its highest amount of light refracted.  There are many famous producers of lead crystal, including Waterford (known for its crystal stemware) and Swarovski (known for crystal beads and jewelry).

It is now considered to be dangerous to drink from crystal glasses or bottles, as the lead can leach into the food or drink that is in the container.  If you have concerns, contact the lead crystal manufacturer or purchase a home test kid for lead.
