How do I create a backyard compost pile?

Answer:
Creating a compost pile is fairly simple. All you'll need is a small space, a couple of tools, and organic material.

For tools, you'll need are a pitchfork, shovel, and a hose
(especially if you live in a dryer climate). You'll also need a small space in a shaded area where you can pile your green (fresh) and brown (dead) materials into a heap or place the material into a container or bin.

Add green and brown material to the pile as you get them—chopping up larger pieces—adding water to the dry items. Once you get your compost heap going, mix in green material and bury the fresher items under a layer of compost. Use your pitchfork or shovel to stir things up a couple times a month adding moisture when needed.

It can take a few months to a couple of years to get the desired results but you'll know it's ready when the bottom layer is a dark, rich soil with an earthy smell.

Use your compost in the garden as a fertilizer by tilling it into the soil before planting season or use it to build up soil that is heavy with clay. You can also use it as mulch around the base of plants for protection giving the plants an added boost to help them grow.
