Should I Plant Grass Seed or Lay Sod?

Answer:
No home is complete without the beauty of an expansive
green lawn to welcome the eye, so with new construction or extensive renovation, it is important to focus on this feature as soon as possible.  The two ways of accomplishing the nice green lawn is to use grass seed or lay sod.

Grass seed is a very economical choice, costing very little compared to sod, however, it can take weeks for the new lawn to become established and you need to wait for the right weather or time of year before you plant.

If an instant lawn is required, then laying sod would be the best choice.  Although sod is much more expensive than seed, it will give the instant look of green lawn.  One thing to keep in mind with sod is that it typically contains only one or two varieties of grass, which, depending upon the variety, can limit its successfulness in areas of high sun or deep shade.  With grass seed, this planting limitation can be alleviated by combining various types of grass seed in the same mix.  Sod must also be laid on an extremely flat suface.  Any air getting under sod can kill it.

Depending on your unique circumstance there isn't a yes or no answer to your question.  If time is an issue then go with sod.  If time isn't an issue but cost is then go with seed.
