What can go into a Compost pile?

Answer:
There are certain items that can and cannot go
into a compost pile.

The most common materials are:

animal manure
coffee grounds and filters
eggshells
ashes from the fireplace
fruits and vegetables
grass clippings
leaves
shells from nuts

to name just a few. These materials are often referred to as green and brown. Green refers to materials such as fresh cut grass, manure, fruits, etc. and Brown refers to dry grass and leaves, straw and so forth. A combination of green and brown makes for a healthy compost pile.

There are also materials that should not go into your compost pile, such as: Black walnut leaves or twigs, coal or charcoal ash, dairy products, grease and oils, pet wastes and anything treated with chemicals or pesticides.
