What is an Arbor?

Answer:
In a gardening sense, any shaded sitting area may
be considered an arbor, although many people associate the term with a specific type of latticework structure covered in clinging or climbing plants. An arbor may feature organic seating such as a stone bench, or commercial outdoor furniture such as a covered swing or metal patio chairs.

The key element of an arbor is the shade it provides to garden visitors.  The vine-covered trellises or pergolas may provide some architectural interest, but an arbor is just as much about the shade trees and covered seating as it is about the climbing greenery.  An arbor in a backyard garden is often at the end of a walking path covered by a pergola, or placed in a scenic central area of a flower garden.  It would not be unusual for a homeowner to entertain guests in an arbor during an informal "garden party".

An arbor might also serve as the location for an outdoor wedding, with the bride, groom, minister and bridal party standing under the arch of a garden trellis.  An arbor doesn't have to be an elaborate design element in a flower garden as long as it supplies shade and a comfortable seating area for visitors.
