What is Fertilizer?

Answer:
Most people remember the nursery rhyme, “Mary,
Mary, quite contrary, how does your garden grow?”  Had Mary thought about the question, she probably would have answered, “Fertilizer.”  Fertilizer is the magic behind most beautiful gardens and lawns.

Whether made from natural ingredients, like cow manure or fish emulsions, or synthetically produced from a chemical combination of nitrogen, potassium, and other elements, fertilizer is used to help boost the soil and the plant itself to increase the production of flowers, foliage, and fruit.  Some fertilizers are absorbed from the soil, through the roots, and into the plant, to be processed by the plant for better growth.  Other fertilizers are directly absorbed by the plant through the foliage surface, offering the plant immediate access to the nutrients contained within the fertilizer.
