What is Mulch?

would be the fluffy blanket that everyone would fight over. Designed to insulate and protect, mulch is the gardener’s best friend. Whether you hail from gardens in the North or the South, every flowerbed can benefit from mulch’s handiwork.

Mulch beautifies garden areas by helping to inhibit weed growth, while offering a distinctive separation between lawn and flower areas. Mulch also helps the water deprived by holding in precious moisture while promoting much needed airflow to plant roots. Mulch comes in a variety of different materials, some natural and some not, but each with their own distinctive benefits.

For the natural approach, there is shredded mulch made from trees, like cypress, pine, and cedar, not to mention bark mulch which takes longer to break down. There is colored mulch and mulch made from recycled tires, as well as paper mulch which is sold on giant rolls for easy application.

Mulch can be generated from a compost bin, offering the benefits of compost’s rich organic wonder. Regardless of the material, no garden should be without a healthy layer of mulch to top off plantings, new and old.
