What is sod?

Answer:
Sod, also known as “turf” in British English,
is grass, including the roots and the soil in which the roots are embedded.  Sod is often sold in rolls, and looks much like a lawn which has been rolled up.  It is purchased by homeowners or landscapers for lawns which can be established quickly, instead of waiting for grass seed to grow.  Farms which grow sod often grow different varieties of sod in order to provide for different preferences.

Grass grown for sod is planted and harvested in 10 to 18 months.  The grass is fertilized, watered, and mowed frequently to keep it green, and has the clippings vacuumed up.  Sod can be harvested in a variety of ways, including small squares, or small or large rolls.  Sod can be used to grow an entire lawn or to replace part of a lawn where the grass has died.
