How Do I Hem Pants?

Answer:
It is not uncommon for pants to need adjustments after
you purchase them. It would be easier if we were all the same size and shape, but we are not. We will now take a look at how to professionally hem your pants.

If there is a hem in the pants, remove the current hem. If there is a crease from this hem, make sure you iron it in order to remove all of the creases. The next step is to try on the pair of pants while wearing the type of shoes that you will be wearing with the pants. Then, mark the location of the desired hem with tailors’ chalk or straight pins, making sure it is an even distance from the floor using a ruler or yardstick. Next, take off the pants and straighten out any markings if you need to. Lightly press the new hemline using an iron, pinning the fabric to the inside. Try on the pants again to verify this will work. Repeat this step if you need to. Once you are satisfied, trim off the excess fabric, leaving a hem allowance of 2” for dress slacks and 1” for a top stitched hem. Now, press the new hem line well. Using basting stitches, ease in any excess fullness in the fabric. Finish the raw edge of the fabric, using hem tape if the fabric is bulky. All that remains is to stitch the hem into place, and then press it well with an iron.
