How do I know if my child is ready to have a pet?

Answer:
Owning a pet is a desire of many children, but takes
a lot of time and care for both the children and adults in the house.  Deciding whether your child is ready to have a pet requires thinking about a number of factors.  It is important to remember that, although you may want your child to take responsibility for many aspects of the pet, the whole family needs to decide if they are ready for a pet.

One thing to think about is the family’s financial situation.  Pets can be expensive, when you take into account that they need food, some kind of habitat, cage, or bed, and veterinary care.  You must be prepared to spend the necessary money if a pet becomes ill, and should not expect your child to provide for this.  However, your child could perform chores around the house in order to buy special treats or toys for his or her pet.

Another important factor is the amount of time a family has to spend on a pet.  Dogs require the most time, generally, as they need to go on walks and require human interaction throughout the day.  Cats are more independent, and many small animals such as rats, hamsters, and lizards may actually prefer to be left alone but can be handled when desired.  Make sure that you and your child have the time to spend on a pet, as nobody will be happy if you are not able to meet the animal’s needs.

Finally, pay attention to the amount of responsibility that is shown by your child.  This will vary with the age of the child, and you want to make sure that you are not expecting too much of a very young child.  Decide what you expect him or her to do – to walk the dog, for example, change the litter box for the cat, or feed the fish.  Then provide a comparable chore and keep track of how successfully the child performs it for a few weeks or a month.  This will give you an idea of if your child is willing to take on the responsibility of caring for a pet.
