What is a Building Code?

Oh the joy of standardization.  Although we may
not have appreciated the idea of ‘measuring up’ when we were kids, we begin to appreciate that concept the moment we contemplate buying a house or starting a business.  What could possibly cause such a change in opinions?

It’s a buyer’s best friend and a contractor’s worst nightmare.  It is called the building code.  Building codes are a wondrous set of regulations, given to contractors of every kind, which dictate the minimum requirements on everything from electrical installation procedures to allowable material usage to structural requirements.  These codes are meant to protect buyers from unsafe building practices, whether those practices include using unhealthy building materials like asbestos or installing faulty wiring that might cause a fire.  Building codes are regulated and defined by governing bodies on city, county, state, and federal levels.  By law, contractors are required to know and implement these building codes, whether the contractors are building residential or industrial buildings.  And if, during inspections, they are found cutting corners and ignoring those building codes, let’s just say that punishment for them is much more painful and much more expensive than it was when we were kids.
