What is a Loft?

Answer:
A loft is typically a room in an upper level of a building;
sometimes with open view of areas below, and may be equipped with railings or half-walls to allow that openness.  The term loft
is also associated with a similarly arranged portion of hay-barns found on many farms, and is sometimes used to refer to a building's attic space.

Sometimes, the term loft may refer to apartment units (i.e., loft apartments), created when old factory buildings are renovated  and made into residential dwelling places.  Often, those buildings have very high ceilings, so loft apartments are created, in which bedrooms are built into the upper level, and living room, kitchen, and eating areas occupy the lower level, usually with an open floor plan.

Lofts and loft apartments were once primarily favored by artist types, but are now more mainstream, especially since factory renovations have become popular urban redevelopment techniques.
