What is a Southwest Style house?

Answer:
A southwest style house is, simply put, a house
that is designed and built in an architectural form which is a reflection of southwestern United States Native American creativeness.

Typically, a southwest style house is faced with a stucco-like plaster, and roofs are finished with clay tiles; usually earthen red in color.

True southwest style architecture is, of course, primarily seen in southwest areas of the United States. The style is seen nationwide, but normally with some localized modifications.  Southwest architecture is often low and sprawling, though multiple stories are sometimes seen as well.

Some characteristic features of southwest style houses include hip-roofs; multiple gables; large, gracious entryways; arched doorways and windows and stonework patios and walkways, to mention a few.

Southwest style houses originally were intended to blend with their (southwestern) surroundings.  Much of the modern day southwest style architecture borrows from Native American cleverness with regard to using local materials in construction and landscaping, even if the materials of today are not really local and are synthetic!
