in a narrow property lot is to use an attached tandem garage design. A tandem garage allows two vehicles to be parked end-to-end instead of side-by-side in a traditional two-car garage arrangement.

A tandem garage does not require as much width as a standard garage, but it still provides the additional storage or workshop space many homeowners desire.  The main drawback of a tandem garage design, however, is that drivers must park their cars end-to-end, which may create a logistical problem without two separate means of exiting.  Some tandem garage designs do allow for a separate rear garage door which opens into the backyard.  A second driver may be able to access an alley to exit the property or a separate driveway may lead around the tandem garage to the main road.  The ideal arrangement for a tandem garage is to have a primary car for regular commutes in the front and a second car for occasional use parked in the rear.

A modified tandem garage may have room for a third car or extra storage space.  In this configuration, the garage would have two doors in the front, with room for one car on the left and two cars parked in tandem on the right.  The third vehicle could be a recreational vehicle or a family car shared by parents and children.  The space for a third car can also be converted into a workshop or even finished off as a spare room for other uses.  A tandem garage is a common feature in planned communities and subdivisions where lots are especially narrow but the houses can still be oversized.
