What is Home Improvement Fraud?

themselves, and sometimes it becomes necessary for an owner to call a contractor for home improvement needs, such as roof replacement, window and door replacement, or even home expansions. If care is not taken while selecting a contractor, a home owner can become the victim of Home Improvement Fraud.

Home Improvement Fraud occurs when a contractor is hired to fix, repair, or expand a property, and fails to do so either by taking the money and running, by failing to complete the job, by using dangerous or inappropriate materials for the job, or by doing the work improperly, resulting in serious damage to the home later on down the road.

Home Improvement Fraud is most often visited on the elderly, those who are unable to afford higher priced contractors, and those who are unable to protect themselves through proper contractor investigation. By the time most home owners realize they have been victims of Home Improvement Fraud, the contractor is long gone, having relocated to another region to victimize someone else.
