Approximately how much does it cost per square foot to have Custom Cabinets built?
Answer:
Custom cabinets are not usually cheap
But, custom cabinets can be far superior in quality, fit, finish and attention to detail than some of the best mass-produced cabinets available.

Custom cabinets can be either those that are custom ordered through home-centers, or they can be those that are custom fabricated by a professional, skilled cabinet-maker.

That said, custom cabinet prices will vary widely by geographic region, cabinet-maker's capabilities and access to proper materials and equipment, and a host of other variables.

It is impossible to arrive at a meaningful per-square-foot cost (technically, cabinets are normally priced by linear footage, or running footage); however, I do think we can arrive at a budgetary estimate

Some industry rule-of-thumb estimating methods usually provide the most reliable results. One of those is called the 20 Cabinet Rule, which essentially sizes a typical kitchen at that number of cabinets, and assigns some type of emperical formula to arrive at a ballpark estimate; which is about as good as this kind of thing gets, I'm afraid.

From Keidel Supply Co. (Ohio) website:

Example: $300,000 House
Stock Cabinets: Approximately $6000 - $8000
Semi-Custom Cabinets: Approximately $10,000 - $12,000
Custom Cabinets: Approximately $20,000 - $22,000

What I don't know in this example is whether or not the custom cabinets are the home-center type or the cabinet maker type.  Judging from the site, it looks like it's the former, and that leads me to conclude that real custom cabinets (i.e., the kind built by professional cabinet makers) would be even more costly, depending on all those variables mentioned earlier.
