Answer:
Learning how to "hang a window" (or For the sake of keeping this as generic as possible, I will outline a simple window installation in an existing wall, on the ground floor of a standard ranch house. Already investigated and determined the location is free of wiring or plumbing. Note: This article describes only basic steps. Each project will vary in actual requirements, and will likely include additional steps not covered or detailed here. Certain general safety precautions must be considered with such a project, and it is presumed that anyone who may consider such a DIY effort is familiar enough with general construction safety to know what is needed to ensure nobody gets hurt. General Safety Reminders: o Read and follow all manufacturers' labels, guidelines and instructions for safe use, handling and application of any equipment, tool or product used. o Review thoroughly the potential for any wiring or plumbing that may run through the wall at the proposed window location. Make necessary arrangements to reroute as needed. Basic Steps: 1. Select window size; procure window. 2. Determine rough opening (RO) dimensions needed to install window. 3. Mark the rough opening dimensions on the inside wall where the window is intended to go. 4. Drill starter holes through wallboard for sawblade. 5. Cut and remove wallboard to rough opening size. 6. Remove any insulation within the rough opening. 7. Drill starter holes through exterior wall to mark the four corners of the rough opening. 8. From outside, mark the rough opening on the wall using the four corner points as guides. 9. Cut and remove exterior wall to rough opening size. 10.Cut and remove studs within the rough opening area. 11.Construct window header; appropriately sized. 12.Install appropriate studs and nailers to frame in the rough opening. These should be flush with the rough opening cut-out in the wallboard and exterior wall, and be sure to plumb and level them. Also, be sure to set the "jack studs" in place at either side, for supporting the window header. And, you might need to install some shorter jack studs under the lower nailer as well. 13.Install window header on jack studs. 14.Remove window from its packaging. 15.Slide window into rough opening; attach all around with appropriate screws or nails. 16.Replace wallboard and install interior trim and insulation, etc. around window; including moldings, sill, etc. 17.Install necessary siding trim (i.e., "J" channel, etc.) and window frame trim around exterior of window; including moldings, etc. 18.Caulk, spackle and paint (or stain) as needed to seal and finish.
