How do you glaze cabinets?

Answer:
Applying a glaze finish to cabinets is not too
difficult a DIY project, and the resulting change in appearance will give them that aged look.

Cabinet glazes are really nothing more than a pigmented paint product mixed (thinned) with a glaze medium designed to allow the paint to be applied in a translucent layer, so the background color still shows through.

Home Centers sell a variety of glaze mixes, some even intended to present a crackled, wrinkled or other special effect.

Be sure to follow manufacturers' instructions regarding safe handling, use and application.

Basic steps for glazing cabinets:
1. Remove cabinet doors and drawers.
2. Clean thoroughly (with a clear, non-surfactant cleaner such as ammonia or white vinegar) all surfaces to be glazed.
3. Mix glaze and paint according to instructions with the glaze product.
4. Apply with cloth (or as instructed with product) onto desired surfaces.
5. Allow to dry.
6. Replace cabinet doors and drawers.

You may also wish to lightly rub the glazed surfaces with a super-fine steel wool (#0000), to give your glazed cabinets that hand-rubbed look.
