How do you stain grout?

Answer:
Whether remodeling an existing room that has tile or
designing a new one, it is sometimes nice to spruce things up a bit by staining the grout a different color than conventional white. If the tile is already installed, it is not too late to add that splash of color. Like most other do it yourself projects, there is a series of products available on the market to help facilitate the process.

Most grout stains are water or oil based, very similar to the kinds of stains one might use to stain wood.  Which you choose is up to you, but some say that oil based stains have a better penetrating power, while water based varieties are easier to clean up.

Whatever you preference, choose a color that matches your mood.  Most home improvement centers have displays showing what the finished product will look like.  Make sure that the grout is completely clean and dry.  There are cleaners on the market specifically designed to clean grout, so make sure to follow manufacturers’ instructions, allowing the appropriate amount of time for drying.

Once cleaning is complete, the next step involves a great deal of elbow grease.  Using a small brush, apply the stain, again according to the manufacturer’s instructions, making sure not to allow the stain to come in contact with the tile itself.  Some types of tiles can stain just as well as the grout, so place your brush strokes carefully.

Once the stain has been applied and allowed to dry, consider sealing it with a grout sealer.  This will ensure that you have beautifully stained grout for years to come.
