Is Cabinet Refacing Expensive?

Answer:
Cabinet Refacing is usually a lot less expensive
than cabinet replacement, without question.  Simply put, cabinet refacing requires less labor and material to accomplish, thus it should cost less.  Some sources say cabinet refacing costs only one-third the cost of cabinet replacement.

However, this is assuming that the cabinet placement and layout is not a factor, and all cabinets will remain in their existing places.  Of course, "expensive" is a subjective term, and one could likely spend lots of money on special exotic wood, custom made new cabinet doors and drawer fronts (i.e., "refacing"), but comparing typical cabinet refacing to typical cabinet replacement, cabinet refacing wins, hands down.

Cabinet refacing is truly a viable (even preferable, in many instances) alternative to cabinet replacement, and not only because cabinet refacing is less expensive, but also because it is less disruptive to normal living routines, as it does not require messy cabinet tear-outs and all the other exhaustive and frustrating steps involved with cabinet replacement.  Trust me...I've been there...I've done it both ways in my own home, and I must promote cabinet refacing as my personal option; again, providing no layout changes are planned.

In my own experience, I chose to fabricate my own new doors and drawer fronts.  I am not a "cabinet-maker" by profession, so I made no attempts to create anything super-original or fancy; instead, I simply cut some birch plywood, routed the edges, routed a few vertical grooves in the outside faces, installed some cabinet hinges and hardware, and slapped them in place.  The drawer fronts were a little trickier, because I had to remove the old drawer fronts, which were glued to the drawer boxes.  A good hammer-blow did the job in most cases.  I re-glued my new drawer fronts to the drawer boxes, clamped them overnight, installed the hardware, and presto!  New drawers!

While my own experience is not "typical" for cabinet refacing (i.e., some things are just best left to the "professionals"!), it did show me that such a task is not impossible, even for the non-professional.   There are a lot of options today for cabinet refacing, and most home centers carry the necessary supplies and some even put on training classes for those who choose to take the plunge and do the job themselves!

There are also a lot of home improvement, home repair, or handyman contractors who specialize in cabinet refacing.  Of course, prices will vary by area and going rates of materials and labor, but rest assured that comparing "apples-to-apples", cabinet refacing should always be less expensive than cabinet replacement!
