What are some Low Maintenance Deck Surfaces?

Answer:
There are several materials being used today for low maintenance deck surfaces
Although they cost significantly more than what might be considered "medium" maintenance (wood) deck surfaces, some people will not settle for less.

Probably the best low-maintenance deck surface is composite deck material (example: Trex).  Most composite deck materials come in a variety of colors and textures. All components are available in the same material, including railings, balusters, posts, etc.

Composites do not rot, split, splinter, or require painting/staining; and they last a long time.  Installation is the same as with wood materials.

Next in line is vinyl deck materials.  Vinyl does not require much maintenance, other than periodic washing, and it lasts a long time

Vinyl deck systems can be difficult to install, as they are typically designed with numerous "kit" pieces such as board end caps, screw head covers, deck board fillers, rubber spacers (to minimize "squeak" when walked on), and more.

Redwood and cedar deck materials are considered low-maintenance, since they are naturally resistant to rot and deterioration from exposure to the elements. And, if properly treated, will last for a long time.

Finally, modern treated lumber and wood preservatives/sealers help to make even inexpensive wood deck materials almost eligible for low maintenance status.
