What is a baluster?

Answer:
Don't be alarmed when I tell you that somewhere
in someway you will find balusters in your house.   AHHHHH!  If I called it a spindle, your mental picture might be a bit more clear.

Balusters are the rods that support the handrail of a staircase or railing.  They are made of a variety of woods and metals.  They are variety of decorative shapes, round, or square.

On a deck you will often see the wooden square balusters lining the railing and following down the staircase.  The aluminum balusters are a bit more decorative choice.  They are round, hollow, about 3/4" in diameter and usually painted black.

Inside the house, you will find a bit more decorative wooden balusters and will often see all types of decorative metal balusters.

Whatever their makeup a baluster is a spindle and they are found on railings and staircases.
