What is a Cantilever?

Nothing says magic like the idea of levitation, and
nothing gives the appearance of levitation better than a cantilever design.  A cantilever, quite simply, is any horizontal beam, structure, or outcropping that appears to be supported or restrained only at one end.

A perfect example of this is the classic diving board.  Structurally speaking, cantilevers are very popular, with many bridges, cranes, and truss systems incorporating the cantilever design.  Some cantilevers even have the appearance of being self-supporting, as is the case with many balconies, stairs, and canopies. 

Cantilever racks are used in industry because they are incredibly strong and allow for easy access to heavy materials, like lumber and steel.  The apparent lack of support is only an illusion.  The weight is actually transferred through the supporting end, making the cantilever a safe and attractive design.
