A septic permit is an official document allowing property owners to install a septic system for handling sanitary waste from a home or other building.

Most state, city or town ordinances and building codes require that septic systems be engineered by certified professional engineers, to ensure safe, clean and proper functioning of the system.

In locations where well water is required for domestic water supply, the well must be a certain distance from any septic sytems (distance may vary by locale), to ensure protection against cross-contamination.
