Subcontractor.  Subcontractors are hired by contractors to perform a certain duty within the whole project.  Take for instance a new house.  Each one of the following phases or tasks is handled by a subcontractor, generally working for a different company then the next subcontractor and there to perform the job they specialize in.

Excavator
Foundation
Waterproofing for Foundation
Drainage around houses perimeter
Framer
Doors and Windows
Flatwork (Driveway/Basement floor)
Electrician
Plumber
HVAC
Drywaller
Finish Carpenter (Trim, shelves, hardware, etc.)
Hardwood Floor Installer/Finisher

Cabinets
Painters
Alarm System
Mirror
Bath Doors

Lawn Treatment

These subcontractors are hired by a contractor to complete the project the contractor is overseeing.
