What is Free Floating Floor?

Answer:
In the old days, the only way to install a hardwood
floor was to glue the boards and nail them to the sub floor.  Thanks to more modern advances in design, hardwoods can now be installed as free floating floors.  Free floating floors are floors which do not require the use of nails during installation, relying instead on tongue and groove fitting.

The free floating floor is installed over specially insulating underlay, which is laid directly over the sub floor.  There are free floating planks which have a snap fit, which does not require glue, and there are plain tongue and groove which require a light application of glue along the groove to help keep the tongue fitting tight.

With free floating floors, the wood is free to expand and contract with the changes of the seasons without the worry of nails creeping up past the floor surface, creating annoying creeks.  Since free floating floors are so easy to install, not only does it take less time for installation, it also costs less when having a professional installer do the work for you.
