What is Insulation? |

Answer:
Insulation, as it applies to building When mankind began snuggling into a cave or cavern to find protection against the cold or the elements, insulation was being put to use. Back then, though, we chose to crawl INTO the insulation rather than building it around us as we do today. My guess is that even in the caves, someone quickly learned how to stuff the cave opening with brush or leaves or even snow, to provide insulation against the outside. Modern building techniques incorporate well designed insulation measures, using a variety of product types, including fiberglass rolls and batts, polystyrene panels, fiberglass insulation board, mineral wool, polyethylene sheets, sheetrock, and others. One of the most important things to remember about building insulation is its "R-Value". R-Value is an accepted industry measurement of insulation's resistance to heat flow; that is, its ability to slow down heat losses through walls, ceilings, roofs, etc. The higher the R-value, the better the insulation will help to keep you warm. Some of the building insulation types in use today: o Fiberglass wool -- manufactured with spun glass fibers. o Mineral wool -- manufactured with minerals or metal oxides (natural or synthetic). o Polystyrene panels -- manufactured with polymers (i.e., Styrofoam).
