What is Laminate Flooring? |
|
Answer:
Laminate floors are simply hard floor coverings made with a laminated material Laminate floors are typically manufactured from a layer of pulverized, pressed wood mixed with resins (or sometimes made from all-synthetics), then topped with a vinyl layer which has been imprinted with a photographic image of natural wood, stone, brick, marble, or other similar look. Laminate floors are said to outlast natural wood floors, since they are more impervious to moisture, denting, and other normal wear. In addition, laminate floors require less maintenance; no re-sanding and refinishing like natural wood floors need once in a while. Laminate floors are installed as "floating" floor coverings. That is, the laminate flooring material is not attached to the floor below, so it can shrink and grow with atmospheric changes. Typically, laminate floors are about 1/4" smaller all around the room to allow for this movement. Moldings may be used to hide these gaps, as long as they are not attached to the laminate floor material, but only to the vertical surfaces. Laminate floors are less expensive than some other floor coverings, especially wood and ceramic tile. Laminate floor installations fall in the DIY category for those with solid carpentry and general handyman skills. Trackback(0)
